So, I really like Uncommon Goods, or I did anyway. Actually, come to think of it, I'm constantly berating them for wanting all my money, and as you'll see below, I have good reason to hate Uncommon Goods.

I got a number of holiday gifts for people from them this year. Specifically, I was excited about their glassware made from recycled windshields. I got a pair of beer glasses for my brother, a pair of beer glasses for [livejournal.com profile] kingsurlydave, and a pair of wine glasses for [livejournal.com profile] bsdinobaby.

Because they were going to multiple recipients, I had it all shipped the Acres. When the giant box arrived, one of the beer glasses was broken. [livejournal.com profile] kingsurlydave became the loser in all this, because I was going to see my brother in person, and I figured when I let customer service know, I could get them to ship the replacement directly to him. Indeed, they responded quickly to my e-mail with a little questionnaire about the incident, which included a question about whether they should upgrade the shipping (at their expense) so the gift would arrive in time. Furthermore, they noted that there was no reason to ship the damaged items back to them or anything. ($Painful Acres free bonus glass total = 1.)

I responded in detail to the questionnaire and noted that it would be terrific if they could ship to the recipient's address. I didn't hear anything, but the whole exchange led me to believe that this was all a done deal. Imagine my surprise, then, when I got a polite thank you note for gifts from [livejournal.com profile] queensurlyjess, who said that no glasses had arrived when I asked for confirmation.

I hopped on UG's "live chat" customer support and Javon told me that they'd received an e-mail from me, but it had been blank other than a "duplicate e-mail snipped" notification. Please bear in mind that almost 3 weeks had elapsed now since they'd received that. Javon was sadly at a loss to explain why the case had been left open, pending further information, but no one had, you know, solicited further information. However, I cut and pasted my responses into the chat window, and Javon assured me that the glasses would go out Monday morning (this was Sunday).

The glasses DO appear to have gone out Monday morning. Do you know how I know? Because they showed up on my doorstep yesterday. The saddest part of this is that they were so nearly there. The box does have a teeny tiny label positioned at the upper left, where normal people put the "from" address. That tiny label has an even tinier "To:" after which [livejournal.com profile] kingsurlydave's address appears. With a sigh, I sent yet another e-mail. (I just couldn't even look at Javon's text in live chat at this point.) I asked—no begged—them to please please please ship the glasses to [livejournal.com profile] kingsurlydave, and if they wanted the glasses back that they'd sent to me, they'd better arrange for UPS to come to my goddamned door and get them.

Another e-mail from Javon assures me that they will ship the glasses to [livejournal.com profile] kingsurlydave immediately. And, oh, by the way, there's no need to return the package that was shipped to me in error.

What are the chances of the glasses arriving, one having been broken, versus the likelihood that I *claim* one of them arrived broken, but is indeed intact.

Anyone like placing bets?

I know. I know. You'll have to get in line behind [livejournal.com profile] chicagowench if you'd like to beat me with a bar of soap in a tubesock.

Ask shysterb sometime about the broken teapots and the six months worth of promises from the vendor before we finally threw in the towel. This was like ten years ago. I hoped things were better by now.
